Project Overview

I had the exciting opportunity to redesign the website for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). The goal was to create a user-friendly experience that effectively delivers educational content while connecting with students, industry partners, and the academic community. The department is a leader in materials science, and I wanted the website to reflect its innovative spirit while making navigation effortless.

Challenges:
Issues with the Old Website
Outdated Design

The previous site lacked a modern look and was visually unappealing.

Poor Navigation

Users, including prospective students and industry collaborators, struggled to find information.

Limited Engagement

The poor user experience made it difficult for visitors to explore and trust the department’s offerings.

The challenge was to transform this outdated website into an intuitive and visually compelling platform that enhances engagement and credibility.

Design Approach

To address these issues, I designed a modern, card-based layout to solve these issues. This approach keeps content organized, visually engaging, and easy to browse. I drew inspiration from Bauhaus principles with simplicity, functionality, and clean lines to match the department’s scientific and innovative vibe.

Impact

The redesigned website successfully enhances usability and engagement, making it easier for students, faculty, and industry partners to access essential resources. The cohesive design language reinforces the department’s brand identity and its commitment to scientific excellence.

Takeaways

Looking back, this project was a journey full of challenges, creativity, and growth. It felt like solving a giant puzzle, figuring out what users needed, designing a structure that made sense, and bringing it all to life in a way that truly represented the department’s spirit.

One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of balancing aesthetics with function. A design can be beautiful, but if it doesn’t help users navigate effortlessly, it’s not doing its job. This project taught me to listen deeply, iterate patiently, and never underestimate the power of simplicity.

Most of all, I had fun. I love creating experiences that feel intuitive, welcoming, and just a little bit delightful. I hope this project shows not just my skills but also my passion for design that makes life easier, and maybe even a little more enjoyable for the people using it.
